Molecualr markers (RAPD and AFLP, in our case) confirmed that M. esculenta ssp flabellifolia is the direct ancestor of cassava but also pointed out that some other species have likely contributed to the genetic diversity of cassava. We present AFLP and RAPD data that 1) give new information on the closest relatives to cassava, 2) confirm that M. carthaginensis s. l. (that includes M. glaziovii mostly referred to here) is the most divergent species from cassava among Brasilian species but that it has hybridised with cassava, leading to introgressed cultivars and also intermediate forms that reproduce vegetatively (by the farmers) or spontaneously by true seeds and 3) show that a group of traditional cultivars have close afffinity with a cultivar artificially introgressed from M. glaziovii and with some of the intermediate forms mentioned above. |
